About

My passion for editing and why I chose this type of work:

I have always loved getting lost in a book and imagining the different worlds and characters that inhabit them. This pull toward storytelling and world-building led me to seek my bachelor’s degree in creative writing at Beloit College. Through that experience, I found that I enjoyed the process of workshopping my peers’ writing. After college, I explored the publishing world and worked with several presses, learning the ins and outs of production and manuscript selection. However, my real passion always lay with stories and the ideas behind them.

I sought a career to center my love of workshopping a writer’s piece and learned that developmental editing was precisely that! I returned to school and completed the editing certificate from the University of Chicago’s Graham School, and I’ve been in love with the field ever since. I get to read imaginative stories, work with fantastic writers, and give in-depth feedback on what works well in a given manuscript, and where things might need some adjustment. It is a privilege to help my clients make their writing the best it can be.

My editing philosophy:

  • It’s not my story, I’m just giving suggestions.
  • To help authors understand what they do well and what might need improvement—the straight talk, if you will.
  • To help polish your story and ensure your voice remains intact during editing.
  • Read through the full work before diving into feedback. This means I understand the characters and storyline before suggesting any changes or making comments that may be answered in the next chapter.
